SFTC Students Won 2nd Prize in the National Vocational Skills Competition

From May 29 to 31, the “Tour Guide” Contest of the 2019 China National Vocational Skills Competition—was held at Nanjing Institute of Tourism and Hospitality. Co-organized by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and Tianjin Municipal People’s Government, the “Tour Guide” Contest has drawn 144 contestants of 99 vocational colleges from 31 provinces or autonomous regions. The contest has 5 tests parts, including tourism knowledge, impromptus tour guiding, introducing a pre-chosen scenic spot, tourism English test and the talent show. Through fierce competition, Han Tong from SFTC won a second prize.

The innovation of each year’s tour guide contest has had higher requirements for contestants and their instructors. In the tourism knowledge test part, 1000 questions on basic tour guide knowledge, tour guide practice, tourism laws and regulations and tourism hotspots are challenging every contestant. The impromptus tour guiding part requires the contestant to draw one tourism culture element out of 80 and one touring group type from 10, and prepare for 30 minutes before giving an impromptus tour guiding in Chinese. The third part asks the contestants to draw a Chinese 5A scenic spot or world heritage not located in their region, and prepares a 5-min mock tour guiding with PPT presentation. In the tourism English test, contestants are asked to have a 3-min conversation with the judges regarding one of the 80 tourism practical topics to show off their English language capability to serve the foreign guests. The talent show part is to test the contestants’ ability to entertain their guests appropriately and any portable entertaining gadget can be used. In all, the contest is a comprehensive test of contestants' professional skills.

Han Tong’s performance has showcased the achievements of SFTC’s talent cultivation, and the Program of Tourist Management shall further its efforts to sharpen their students’ talents to better meet the needs of the travel agencies.
