The Business Foreign Languages Department

Formally established in 1998, the Business Foreign Languages Department (BFLD) of SFTC now has 3 Programs and 2 Program-orientations, namely, Business English, Business Japanese, Applied Korean, Business English (Software Outsourcing) and Business Japanese (Software Outsourcing). BFLD also offers language courses, including German, French and Spanish.

The department has a great faculty team. Currently, it has more than 40 full-time teachers, over 30 part-time teachers and 15 foreign teachers. One-third of its faculty has studied in the United States, Australia, Japan and South Korea. 3 teachers have been conferred C-E Simultaneous Interpretation Certificates by the EU. BFLD teachers offer high-end foreign language services to the key leaders of Shandong Province and Qingdao City in the major social and economic events, international conferences and sports events all year round. 1 teacher acted as a senior interpreter in the Sailing Regatta (Qingdao) of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Putting students first and following the rules of language acquisition, BFLD works closely with the relevant enterprises, and promotes a talent cultivation mode integrating teaching curriculum with work requirements, building a pathway between on-campus learning and on-job training. Students of BFLD enjoy colorful campus life, such as sports events and the Foreign Language and Culture Experiencing Festival.

In the past three years, BFLD teachers have compiled 6 State-level Textbooks, accomplished 7 Province-level Teaching Reform Projects, and won many awards and titles from Shandong Province, include 1 Prestige Program, 1 Province-level Outstanding Teaching Team, 1 Province-level Advanced Course, 1 Prestige Teacher of the Province, 2 Third Prizes for Teaching Reforms. And in 2013, BFLD won 3.2 million yuan fiscal support from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for its “Business English Campus Training Centre” Project.

In the past three years, students from BFLD have won numerous prizes, including, 5 First Places, 7 Second Prizes, 5 Third Places in the national foreign-language-related contests; 3 Special Prizes, 2 First Prizes and 6 Second Prizes in the provincial level contests.

So far, BFLD has had over 5,000 graduates, many of whom have started their own businesses or have gone into senior management posts in such large enterprise groups as the Hiking Group and many others.

The Business English Program (Provincial Prestige Program, Qingdao Key Program, Key Training Base supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance)

Formerly known as Foreign Trade English established in 1964, Business English (BE) is oriented to open economy. The program cultivates highly qualified and technical talents who are good at English listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating and skilled in computer, who are good communicators and are able to apply English to international trade operation, translation, education, foreign affairs, business management etc. BE has a provincial outstanding teaching team, including 1 famous teacher of Shandong vocational colleges and schools, 8 teachers who have been trained by EU C-E Simultaneous Interpretation, 20 who obtained master's degrees abroad, 2 who won special and first prizes in National English Teaching Contest and 8 foreign teachers. Business English has a "business foreign languages" training base that is supported by Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance, a "global village" that combines foreign languages teaching and world culture. BE is one of the chairman members of the Business English Committee of Instructing Committee of National Vocational Education of Foreign Economic Relations & Trade.

The Business English Program (Software Outsourcing)

Based on the provincial Prestige Program Business English, Business English (Software Outsourcing) cooperates with large software service outsourcing enterprises in Shandong. Oriented to the emerging industry service outsourcing, the program cultivates highly qualified, inter-disciplinary and technical talents who are good at English, computer and software development, are able to engage in international trade operation, business management etc. and provide software service for large enterprises. Relying on the teaching resources of Business English, Software Technology and the enterprise resources of Shandong Software Industrial Park, Business English (Software Outsourcing) adopts a 2+1 scheme of two-year in-school study and one-year enterprise working. Graduates' employment is totally arranged by cooperated enterprises.

The program cultivates highly qualified and technical talents with fair Japanese listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating skills and communication abilities, who are well acquainted with international trade operation procedures, import and export operation and computers, who are able to apply Japanese into international trade operation, translation, education, foreign affairs, business management etc. All faculty members have education background in Japan, 4 teachers acquired master's degrees in Japan, and 3 are Japanese. Business Japanese has a "business foreign languages" training base that is supported by Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance, a "global village" that combines foreign languages teaching and world culture. BJ has cooperated with over 10 universities in Japan including Kobe International University, Beppu University etc., offering students opportunities to pursue further study in Japan.

Oriented to Korea-oriented enterprises and Korea-funded enterprises, Applied Korean (AK), established over 20 years ago, cultivates highly qualified and technical talents with fair Korean listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating skills and communication abilities, who are well acquainted with international trade operation procedures, import and export operation and computers, who are able to apply Korean into international trade operation, translation, education, foreign affairs, business management etc. All faculty members have education background in Korea. Applied Korean has cooperated with many universities in Korea, offering students opportunities to pursue further study in Korea.
